𝐊𝐚𝐩𝐢𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐯 ~ 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑯𝒂𝒓𝒚𝒂𝒏𝒂 𝑯𝒖𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒄𝒂𝒏𝒆
India vs Pakistan, Faisalabad, 1978.
The Indian debutant bowler ran in fast and bowled a bouncer. The ball climbed steeply and whizzed past Sadiq Mohammad missing his cap by inches. The batsman immediately signalled towards the dressing room and asked for a helmet, something that was unprecedented against Indian bowlers at that time. It was perhaps the first time an Indian bowler had compelled a rival batsman to wear a helmet. Shortly afterwards, another furious bouncer was unleashed by the young bowler and unlike the previous occasion, this time the ball was on target and it hit the batsman on helmet. The signalling of helmet proved a wise decision for the batsman's career and marked the importance of the arrival of dynamic young Indian fast bowler Kapil Dev.
The bowling action of Kapil Dev would become familiar with every household in India over the next decade and a half. His energetic curved run-up; the sudden outward diversion moments before the ball was released; the unconventional ascent of both fists towards the throat; and the perfect release with open chested action that resulted in the most accurate landing; and the best out-swinger India has seen. The jump before the delivery, eyes looking at the batsman, was perhaps the most common poster on the walls of Indian homes during that period. Kapil Dev played a pioneering role in transforming the course of Indian cricket and was named by Wisden as the Indian Cricketer of the Century in 2002.
